Open to all ages. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This program is designed to last 90 minutes so participants can use the free parking along Bay Street.     Come follow the monarchs, explore Napatree, and discover the incredible world of insects along the coast! Join renowned naturalist, journalist, and teacher Bruce Fellman alongside Napatree Naturalists for a fascinating exploration of one of nature’s most incredible seasonal journeys, the migration of the monarch butterflies! For decades, Bruce Fellman has documented Rhode Island’s natural world, with a particular passion for insects, wetlands, and the changing environment. Since 1978, his weekly natural history column, A Naturalist’s Journal, has been a beloved fixture in local newspapers. During this 90-minute guided walk, participants will explore Napatree Point Conservation Area in search of migrating monarchs and other fascinating insects. Learn how to identify these remarkable travelers, discover the challenges they face during migration, and uncover the important role Napatree’s coastal habitat plays in supporting them along their journey. This program is approximately 90 minutes, allowing participants to take advantage of the free parking available along Bay Street. Any individual 18 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult.     Explore & celebrate the remarkable journey of migratory birds in the Napatree Point Conservation Area! Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with Napatree Science Advisor, Dr. Peter Paton, on a 2-mile birding walk along Little Narragansett Bay. As we explore the diverse habitats of Napatree Point Conservation Area, we’ll search for the many resident and migratory bird species that rely on this remarkable coastal landscape. Along the way, we’ll use binoculars and spotting scopes to get a closer look at birds in flight and along the shoreline. Our Napatree Naturalists & Science Advisors will share their knowledge while encouraging participants to share their own observations and appreciation for the birds around us. We welcome both new and experienced birders to join us! Any individual 18 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. A limited number of binoculars will be available for participants. Binoculars generously donated by ParsonsKellog. This program is approximately 90 minutes, allowing participants to take advantage of the free parking along Bay Street.     Join Science Advisor & geologist, Dr. Bryan Oakley, for a geological walk through the Napatree Point Conservation Area. Discover the geological forces that influenced Napatree’s present features and explore how it is continuously shaped by longshore drift and major storms. As we explore the Conservation Area, participants will gain insight on how Napatree’s unique geology contributes to the resilience of this dynamic barrier spit, including its ability to withstand and respond to ongoing climate impacts. About Dr. Bryan Oakley: Dr. Oakley is a broadly trained geoscientist on our Science Advisory Team at The Watch Hill Conservancy and on the Napatree Point Conservation Area. He has dedicated his career to research on glacial, coastal and marine environments. Alongside his work & research with us, he is a professor at Eastern Connecticut State University teaching Environmental Earth Sciences. Program Details:The program will last approximately 90 minutes.
