DESCRIPTION:Join our Naturalists for a guided walk to learn about the natural history\, flora and fauna of Napatree Conservation Area! Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This program is designed to last 90 minutes so participants can use the free parking along Bay Street. This program will start at 9:00 AM and meet at The Napatree Point Conservation Area entrance. Registration is required. Drawing from works in the museum’s collection\, she examines key artist colonies—from Ogunquit\, Maine\, to Cape Ann\, Old Lyme\, and coastal Rhode Island—where painters responded directly to the region’s light\, atmosphere\, and seasonal rhythms.  Through selected case studies\, the presentation considers how place\, community\, and environment informed both subject matter and technique\, resulting in paintings that are at once regionally grounded and central to the broader narrative of American art. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join The Watch Hill Conservancy for a sunset stroll in The Napatree Point Conservation Area! \n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the beauty of late summer with an unforgettable evening in the Napatree Point Conservation Area! Join us for a guided 2-mile sunset walk under the last full moon of the summer solstice. \nAs the sun sets over Little Narragansett Bay\, we’ll explore the wonder of Napatree’s nightlife that becomes active at dusk. During the walk\, we will keep an eye out for a variety of nocturnal and coastal wildlife\, including: \n\nBats\nNight Herons\nDogfish\nHorseshoe Crabs\nWhelks\nRabbits\nMinks\nSkunks\nDeer\nOpossum\nMigratory Birds\n\nOur Science Advisors and Napatree Naturalists will provide a short lecture on the migratory birds & bat activity in the Napatree Point Conservation Area — participants will even get to experience using a bat call detector! \nAs darkness falls\, we’ll gather to observe the full moon through a spotting scope. \nLight snacks and beverages will be provided! \nEvent Details \n\nTime: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM\nDistance: Approximately 2 miles (moderate walking on sand and uneven terrain)\nWhat to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, insect repellent\, water.\n\nPlease utilize the free parking along Bay Street as the parking limitations are not in effect at the time of this program. \nRain will cancel these events. Since 1978\, his weekly natural history column\, A Naturalist’s Journal\, has been a beloved fixture in local newspapers. \nDuring this 90-minute guided walk\, participants will explore Napatree Point Conservation Area in search of migrating monarchs and other fascinating insects. August as he presents Bats in Rhode Island: Their Natural History and Importance to Society. Discover the incredible diversity of bats around the world\, learn about the bats in our own backyard\, and uncover the surprising economic\, ecological\, and medical ways these gentle little mammals contribute to society. You may even leave wondering why we ever thought bats were scary! \nFollowing the presentation\, don’t fly away\, stick around for a short\, bat-tastic Q&A all about bats! \n  \nAaron Lemle is an independent film producer and director based in LA. He created the full-service production company\, A Type Productions LLC that makes films for start-ups\, non-profits\, government organizations\, and education and art institutions around the world. His films have been shown in notable festivals including San Diego International Film Festival\, Palm Springs ShortFest\, KCET Fine Cut\, the San Francisco Doc Fest and have been broadcast on PBS POV.   \nPeter August is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island. He holds a B.S. degree (Biology) from the University of San Diego\, an M.S. degree (Biology) from Texas Tech University\, and a Ph.D. degree (Biology) from Boston University. His dissertation topic was community ecology of small mammals and bats in tropical forests of Venezuela. He has been a science advisor for the Napatree Point Conservation Area in Watch Hill since 2010 and in 2024 August\, co-authored the book Napatree Point: A Decade of Stewardship. \nREGISTER HERE
